Hill and Hollow farm is tucked in the wooded hills of south central Kentucky, surrounded in fact by trees on three sides with a view to the north. The farms fields are low in the landscape, shaped and bounded by the flat rock creek and its branches. Cedar trees have replaced many acres of what was originally cleared and planted by the pioneers who built the barn and outbuildings that we now use.
The farm was long since abandoned by farmers and successive owners were interested logging, woodworking and hunting, leaving the fields we inherited simply overgrown, rather than ravaged by constant crops of tobacco and the accompanying application of chemicals.
We landed here as first generations farmers back in 1998 and have slowly, carefully, thoughtfully built Hill and Hollow Farm into what it is today. The longest standing CSA program serving Nashville. A destination for many seeking to learn how to live lightly on the land and nourish a community.
It was the summer of 1994 when I was introduced to farming on an Illinois CSA farm. In the years since then my love of farming and working with others hasn't dwindled. I have traveled and worked with banana farmers in Australia, orchardists in New Zealand and mixed vegetable growers US before finding this place here in south central Kentucky. Since 1998 we have called this farm home. We have hosted WWOOFers since 2001!
We are currently a mother-daughter farm management team, with an older and younger son on the sidelines ALSO pitching in most days. We offer anyone that comes to our farm the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of life on our 200-acre family farm. We rely heavily on non-mechanized ""human-powered"" gardening on our 2 acre mixed vegetable/herb/cut flower operation. Entering our 27th year of a successful CSA program, we make weekly trips to Nashville, TN to deliver 50 baskets of vegetables to our shareholders. We practice biodynamic farming and are always working to further enhance our farm's self sustainability. A herd of Jacob's sheep, Jack and Rosie our resident horses, and a plethora of poultry provide our farm with fertility and offer animal husbandry opportunities for our apprentices.
